8. persist

= 끈질기게 계속하다 (continue in a determined way despite difficulty)

  • She persisted with her studies in spite of financial problems.
  • He is a persistent student who studies hard every day until he understands the concept.

= 계속되다/지속하다 (continue to exist/happen)

  • The cold weather is set to persist throughout the week.
  • The company is trying to find a solution for the persistent network problems.

** persist (지속되다.) vs. insist (주장하다)

9. stop A from ~ving

  • They stop him from doing something

 

10. entertain

= 고려하다/따져보다 to hold something in your mind/ or be willing to consider something:

  • I’m going to entertain the idea.
  • Let’s entertain the possibility of failure.
  • The General refused to entertain the possibility of defeat.
  • She refused to entertain the thought of failure.

= 즐겁게하다 to help them to have an enjoyable time

  • This can make kids entertained.
  • The show is really entertaining.

 

11. head

  • Where are you headed?
  • I’m heading out now. = I’m leaving now.
  • We should head back now.
  • We should head back to the office.
  • We are headed in the right direction.
  • We are on the right track.

 

12. keep up

= 따라가다

  • Could you slow down a bit? It is hard to keep up.
  • I have a hard time keeping up with you. You are so fast. (속도 따라가다)

= 너무 일이 많아 감당하기 힘들다

  • We can hardly keep up with the demand.
  • Always changing around here. It’s hard to keep up. (변화 따라가다)

= 동료가 나를 칭찬해줄때,…’그냥 너 따라가는 수준이야’라고 농담으로 답하기

  • I’m just trying to keep up with you.

 

13. kick in

  • The jet lag is kicking in.
  • Coffee doesn’t kick in yet.

 

14. live up to

  • It is a bit hard to live up to everyone’s expectation.
