15. put off

= 연기하다

  • Let’s put it off then.

= 싫어하게 만들다/불쾌하게 하다 (It’s off-putting.)

  • The smell of the old house really put me off.
  • His rude behavior put her off.

= 정떨어지게 만들다

  • Don’t be put off by the math for now.

= 방해하다/하던일에 집중하지 못하게 하다

  • The noise put me off from studying.

 

16. suppose

= ~하기로 되어 있다

  • I’m supposed to meet her today.

= 가정하다

  • Let’s suppose that he says no. Do you have a plan?
  • Let’s suppose that everything goes well. Then what’s the next step?

= 추측하다/생각하다 (나도 그렇게 생각해/그럴지도 모르지)

  • I suppose so.
  • What do you suppose will happen?
  • How do you suppose all this will play out?

= 혹시나 해서 물어보는데 (부정적 추측)

  • I don’t suppose she will agree. But it sure worth asking.
  • I don’t suppose you know where she is.
  • I don’t suppose you could help me tomorrow.

 

17. wind up

= 결국 ~하게 되다 (예상치 못한: 원래 의도와 다르게 좋지 않은 상황에 처하게 되는 뉘앙스)

  • We got lost and wound up walking for hours.
  • At first, we planned to split the bill, but I wound up paying for everything.
  • If you keep doing that, you will wind up like him.

= 끝내다, 마무리하다

  • The company decided to wind up its operations.

= 짜증나게 하다/놀리다

  • Stop teasing him, you’re just winding him up. (그냥 약 올리는 거잖아.)

= 태엽을 감다 (물리적 동작)

  • You need to wind up the clock every night.

** end up: 그냥 중립적 느낌, 반면 wind up은 부정적 느낌

 

18. 외국인처럼 표현하기/외국인이 사용하는 일상 표현

  • I’m leaving —> I’m heading out.
  • I’m angry —> I’m pissed off.
  • I understand —> I get what you mean.
  • It’s funny —> It’s hilarious.

  • I take an hour-running every morning.
  • Let’s have a ten-minute break.

20. 10분 정도 늦을거야.

  • I’m going to be 10 minutes late for the meeting.
  • I’m running about 10 minutes late for the meeting, but I’m on my way and will join as soon as I can.

  • I’m doing intermittent fasting, and I had a beer last weekend as a small guilty pleasure.
